Salary
The typical salary of a live-in nanny ranges from $400.00 to $600.00
gross per week depending upon the nanny's education, childcare experience,
and qualifications. Highly experienced nannies may seek a greater
salary. The number of children in your family, their ages, and the
range of responsibilities and chores are also a determining factor
in salary negotiations.
The salary of a live-out nanny ranges from $15 to $20 an hour. Again,
highly experienced nannies may seek a greater salary.
The salary to a nanny is paid 52 weeks per year. If you are taking
a family vacation without the nanny, you may ask her to work at mutually
agreed upon tasks in your home during your absence.
Overnight nannies for newborns can expect to earn $18-20/hr for singletons, $20-25/hr for twins, and $22+/hr for triplets.
Taxes
Legally, the nanny's salary is taxable. The nanny may elect to have
you, the family, withhold income taxes on her salary or she may choose
to be responsible for paying her own estimated income taxes quarterly.
In addition to withholding income taxes when the nanny so elects,
the family is responsible for paying the payroll taxes on the nanny's
salary. These payroll taxes consist of FUTA (federal unemployment
tax), SUTA (state unemployment tax), and one half of FICA (social security and medicare tax). Workmen's Compensation is legally required and can be purchased from an insurance company.
